A Dashboard Is Not a Decision System

More metrics do not automatically create better decisions. A useful analytics system connects each measure to a question, the context needed to interpret it, and an action worth considering.

Begin with the question

Every important metric should exist because someone needs to understand or decide something. Without that question, reporting can become a collection of numbers looking for a purpose.

Make context visible

A value without a baseline, segment, time frame, or operational context can easily produce the wrong conclusion. Context is part of the metric, not an optional annotation.

Connect signals to action

The strongest analytics work makes it clear what deserves investigation or adjustment when a signal changes. If no action could reasonably follow, the measure may not belong in the decision flow.

Data becomes valuable when it reduces uncertainty around a decision.
